The Corolla Cross Hybrid’s cabin is more or less identical to that of the regular version. The difference is quite dramatic, enough so that anyone who drove the gas version and was unhappy should give the hybrid a try if they’re still shopping. While this won’t matter to some drivers, for those who want to enjoy the trip and who look at their car as more than just an appliance, the hybrid is the better of the two. In comparison to the gas Cross, however, it’s significantly more responsive and more engaging. It doesn’t have that kind of performance or power, so don’t get too excited.

The driver feels more in control while passengers are more comfortable and better able to relax rather than being tossed from side to side in their seats. The result is less body roll than with the gas Cross, especially when you’re driving along a twisting side road. It’s tucked down under the rear seats, which creates a lower center of gravity. In this case, that’s countered by how that battery helps improve handling. It adds weight, which is generally a bad thing because extra weight has a negative impact on performance.

Even pebbled pavement and a rutted dirt road were easy to manage. It helps manage bumps and dips in the road more smoothly. This makes for a crisper, more responsive drive that engages the driver rather than feeling somewhat disconnected.

Toyota also gave the full hybrid lineup a sport-tuned suspension that includes coil springs and hydraulic shock absorbers to match its improved power. It’s still not a hot rod, but it’s appreciably faster and handles better than the regular model. The Corolla Cross has always looked handsome, but thanks to the hybrid it now has at least a modicum of performance to match. That’s 2 seconds faster than the gas Cross and those 2 seconds are noticeable. Even at speed, should you suddenly need to accelerate to get across several lanes to your exit, this little crossover is up to the task with a zero-to-60 mph time of 8 seconds. Press on the pedal and it has no trouble getting out of its own way to merge into heavy highway traffic. It’s noticeably quieter under hard acceleration with none of the painfully strained and intrusive noise of the gas Cross. First impressions matter, and this makes a good one that’s trendier than the original. It also offers two-tone paint (that looks fantastic) as well as bold 18-inch wheels. The Hybrid gets a more aggressive, eye-catching look that’s in line with its sportier persona. Park the two different versions of the Corolla Cross next to each other and you’ll notice that the front and rear styling are different. This includes not just performance enhancements, but unique design touches to differentiate it from its sibling.

Instead, Toyota focused on making this version a bit sportier. But for 2023, the Cross didn’t just shove a different engine under the hood. It made its 2022 debut with only a gas engine. The Toyota Corolla Cross expands its lineup with a hybrid version of its increasingly popular crossover. The 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid only gets mild (but rather nice) cosmetic changes from the purely gas-powered version, but it’s a big step up in terms of fuel economy and driving experience.
