(Note that you must be logged on as administrator, if you are not, no "Advanced" tab will appear as described.) For hints about using these Windows features, search firewall in Windows help, and select the article Enable or Disable Internet Connection Firewalls.Ĭonsult your router user guide. See How to: Enable or Disable Internet Connection Firewall In Windows XP. The Windows firewall may be turned on without you knowing, for example, if the XP Network Setup Wizard was used. Two situations are described here, but the general approach applies to any firewall active on a NETGEAR LAN. If this happens, use the NETGEAR firewall, and disable the other. Both are trying to do the same job the conflict may cause an otherwise good Internet connection to drop. I thought I had the Personal Firewall disabled, but found out it wasn't.Often two firewalls on the same LAN conflict. So, if you're having problems, check everything. I traced it down to PC-Cillins' Personal Firewall, and disabled that.

The only problem I had, was if I was trying to download from different peer-peer sites, my computer would reboot. However, since you've corrected the problem, don't worry. it may be contributing to the problem, since you're not using Nortons firewall. However, my NAT (DSL Modem) won't allow me to use cams or microphones, but that's a different complaint.lolĪs for the person not liking ZoneAlarm because of the shutdown problems, I would also look at Nortons Antivirus. However, they both do a great job, IMHO.Īs for the settings, I've got mine set to high (on Pro) and haven't had problems with MSN Messenger. The one advantage I like about the Pro is that if a program tries to access the internet, it gives you a bit more information about the program in question. Personally, it doesn't matter which way you go.

I've used both Zone Alarm Pro and the free download. If it only happened on 1 PC, it would be a hole new story, ZA is known to have memory leaks that crop up at times on many PC's, I haven't heard of any solutions & it was once attributed to running other programs (what programs seemed to depend on the config of each PC) at the same time that caused it. Since dumping ZA & going with Norton Internet Security I haven't had one single problem. The only things I had installed were ZA Pro & Norton Antivirus, the ghost image already had all the MS updates (I don't get all MS updates either, only one's I feel I need, who needs root certificates anyway?īoth PC's are totally different hardware setups, I've had these problems with all ZA's versions since mid to late 2001(ran fine prior to that), several friends have had similar problems also.

I ghost my OS's prior to installing most software including ZA & went so far as to start from my ghost image several times on my 98SE & 2000 PC's & still ended up with same problem on both PC's. I was last using file version 3.5.166.000, tried numerous things to solve the resource problem it was giving me & it was ZA Pro causing the problem, when shutdown problems went away. There are other good firewalls, but I'm happy with ZA. IMHO, nothing worth paying for, as the basic firewall package is identical. Oh, you also get alternate color choices for it. A good stand-alone AV package is much better at that. You also get pop-up control, which you can get with freeware, and LIMITED virus monitoring. It also monitors everything on your computer that tries to connect out, and gives you the opportunity, either on a time-by-time basis, or setting permanent choices, what to allow out.ĪFAIK, the pro version gives you the ability to supposedly identify the sources of anything that pings your puter and sets off an alert, which is mostly a waste of time, since the vast majority ot things that ping your computer are benign. Works just fine, is easy and intuitive to configure, by default blocks EVERY port, so you're not visible at all to bad guys looking for targets. I'm using the free version of ZoneAlarm with XP Pro.
